French↔Portuguese false friends

portanto = therefore (pourtant = however!); atender = to answer/serve, not attendre (wait = esperar); acordar = to wake up, not accorder.

Gender that flips from French

Both languages have gender but many nouns switch: l'arbre (m) → A árvore, la mer (f) → O mar. Don't import the French article.

Drop the subject pronoun

French requires je/tu/il; Portuguese usually drops them — "falo" already means I speak. Saying "eu" every time sounds stiff.

Nasal diphthongs (ão, õe, ãe)

French nasals are steady vowels; Portuguese ão/õe/ãe GLIDE while nasal (pão, põe, mãe). Start from French "on" and add the w-glide.

core challenge

Gender + agreement

Articles and adjectives agree: o livro vermelho / a casa vermelha.

core challenge

ser vs estar

ser = permanent/identity; estar = temporary/state.
