Job interviews

Myself introduction in English: say “My name is…”, not “Myself…”

Start with “My name is Rahul” or “I'm Rahul”. In English, myself cannot be the subject of a sentence, so “Myself Rahul” sounds wrong to interviewers outside India.

Instead of

Myself Rahul, from Pune.

Say

My name is Rahul, and I'm from Pune.

Why Indian speakers say it

This one is less about Hindi grammar and more about a classroom habit: “Myself Rahul” is often taught in Indian schools as the polite way to begin. In English, myself only points back to a subject already in the sentence (“I introduced myself”). It cannot start a sentence on its own, so listeners abroad hear a sentence with no subject and no verb.

  1. Which is the best first line in an interview?

    1. Myself Anil Kumar.
    2. I am Anil Kumar.
    3. Me Anil Kumar.
    Show answer

    b) I am Anil Kumar. “I am Anil Kumar” (or “My name is Anil Kumar”) has a subject and a verb. The other two do not.

  2. Choose the correct sentence.

    1. Myself and Ravi will join the call.
    2. Ravi and I will join the call.
    3. Ravi and myself will join the call.
    Show answer

    b) Ravi and I will join the call. The subject needs I. Myself only works when it points back to I in the same sentence.

  3. Where is “myself” used correctly?

    1. I introduced myself to the panel.
    2. Myself is a mechanical engineer.
    3. You can call myself tomorrow.
    Show answer

    a) I introduced myself to the panel. Here myself points back to I, the subject. That is its job.

Questions

Is “myself” ever correct in an introduction?

Yes, after a verb that points back to you: “Let me introduce myself. I'm Rahul.” What does not work is myself on its own as the subject, as in “Myself Rahul”.

What is a good self-introduction for an interview?

Keep it to about a minute and three parts: who you are now (“I'm Rahul, a mechanical engineer with three years of experience in quality control”), one achievement with a number, and why you want this role.
